New granite countertops are one feature that can make a difference in creating a fresh new look for your kitchen. Granite is a quarried stone product that is a natural honed or polished rock where no two pieces are alike and there are inherent variances in all stone. A regular maintenance regimen will help your natural stone be more resistant to scratching and wear. Natural stone, especially polished stone, is sensitive to harsh chemicals. Although granite (Mohs Hardness Scale 5-7) is incredibly hard and durable, diamonds (Mohs 10) are more so.
When deciding to purchase granite, consider the color, movement, finish, edge profile, and surface finish. Granite countertops have a vivid natural color palette and it can be found in almost any color including white, black, blue, red, and gold. Granite is typically classified by levels with Level One being the least expensive. Level One is easily available and has simple consistent patterns. The granite level is higher when there is more veining, movement and coloring to a slab; the more exotic the stone, the higher the level and more costly the granite.
Other choices to consider are the finish – polished glossy or honed matte; with polished currently being more popular and cost effective. Also, the edge of the granite is another choice. The price for the edge increases when the profile is more complicated and detailed.
